Industry Initiatives
The entertainment and installation technologies industry, worth an estimated £10billion globally, is one of the most innovative and fast-moving specialist industry sectors in the world. PLASA has become a centre of expertise in the sector, both to its members and the wider industry.
In addition to providing a range of advisory services to its growing worldwide membership, it is also leading on the development of qualifications for the industry as a whole.
The first of these is the National Rigging Certificate, a scheme designed to give riggers a recognised framework through which their skills and expertise can be measured - essential in a climate where there is a growing focus on professional best practice. PLASA is also driving the development of qualifications for the PA/VA sector - work that has recently won national recognition from the UK government. Other organisations are now looking to PLASA to direct the development of professional qualifications for their specialist sectors.
PLASA also offers general guidance on careers and professional development opportunities in the sector, works closely with the main Sector Skills Councils and sits on the board of various skills-related organisations, including the National Skills Academy, underlining its aim to ensure that the skills needs of the industry are fully addressed.
The Association also seeks to influence the wider business practices adopted by the industry, in the common interests of maintaining the highest professional standards at every level - and to communicate these standards to businesses specifying technology products and services.
PLASA liaises closely with Government and other partners to develop a greater understanding of the needs of the industry and its work in this area - in particular a high-profile lobbying campaign and sector research activities - is helping to build much better recognition for the industry.
