PLASA is committed to supporting those who work in the entertainment, events and installation industries in developing their wide range of technical skills and creative talents.
We are actively leading the development of qualifications and certification for the industry, with the aim of increasing safety, giving recognition to existing skills and setting the benchmark for best practice.
To ensure the association meets the needs of the regional markets, its skills delivery has followed two paths.
In North America, PLASA runs the Entertainment Technician Certification Program (ETCP) originally developed by ESTA. ETCP is an industry-wide program that brought together an unprecedented group of industry organizations, businesses and subject matter experts to create a process that formally validates the knowledge and skills of professional technicians. ETCP focuses on disciplines that directly affect the health and safety of crews, performers and audiences, and individuals can test to become certified in the following areas - Rigger-Arena, Rigger-Theatre and Entertainment Electrician.
In the UK, PLASA has developed the National Rigging Certificate (NRC). This is a UK-industry led competency-based qualification, designed to give riggers working in all aspects of the entertainment industry formal recognition for their skills and knowledge. The NRC involves the assessment of an individual's practical skill and underpinning knowledge, alongside their work experience. The assessment is carried out by rigging specialists, qualified as assessors, to agreed industry benchmarks. The NRC is currently being piloted in the Nordic region.
If you are interested in bringing certification to your region, read our white paper to learn more about the background of the development and structure of our skills programs and view our PowerPoint presentation to learn what is involved in adapting either certification to your region.
PLASA is also an energetic supporter of crucial initiatives such as the National Skills Academy in the UK and The ESTA Foundation's Essential Skills for the Entertainment Technician (ESET) program in North America and works in partnership with a wide range of skills organizations worldwide.
