Ken Livingstone to speak at PLASA AGM
The former Mayor of London, Ken Livingstone, will be the guest speaker at this year's PLASA AGM and Members Lunch, which takes place on Tuesday 2 June at Kings Place in London.
Livingstone is one of UK politics' more colourful figures: he was a member of the Greater London Council from 1976, its leader from 1981, and was largely responsible for The GLC's popular 'Fares Fair' policy which significantly cut the price of travel on London Transport.
After Margaret Thatcher abolished the GLC, Livingstone went on to become an MP for the Labour Party. In 1999, he stood for nomination as the Labour Party candidate in the London mayoral elections, but despite popular support, the Blairite Frank Dobson was selected. Not one to take things lying down, Livingstone chose to stand as an independent candidate and, as a consequence, was expelled from the Labour Party in 2000. However, he beat all the other candidates decisively, becoming the first modern elected Mayor of London.
During his time in office, he was instrumental in introducing the London Congestion Charge in an attempt to reduce traffic congestion in the city. In 2008, despite a close fought election, he was prevented from securing a third term by Conservative Party candidate Boris Johnson.
As a consequence of his long career in politics, Livingstone will continue the strong line-up of guest speakers that PLASA has traditionally invited to speak at its Members Lunches, which over 200 members and guests are expected to attend.
In addition, the day will also feature hosted tours of Kings Place - the first purpose-built concert hall to be built in London since 1982. PLASA Members will get the opportunity to meet the technical teams from both Kings Place and Arup (the acoustics and technology designers) to learn how the technical installation was fully integrated with the architectural concept to create a venue that has been widely acclaimed.
