A laser light show can be a truly entrancing spectacle. The sight of sheets, waves, cones and beams of light choreographed to music or in free form can inspire and delight audiences. Graphics and written messages can seem to appear from nowhere and enhance any event. Using the information in this guide to supplement other sources of information and training should help to ensure safe and enjoyable laser light show for all.
The new guidance is available from PLASA as a free download. Following this guidance is not compulsory and you are free to take other action. But if you do follow this guide you will normally be doing enough to comply with the law. Health and Safety Inspectors and Local Authorities seek to secure compliance with the law and may refer to this guidance as illustrating good practice.
The guidance has been prepared with the assistance of entertainment based trade bodies, experts in the production of laser displays, event venues, local authority Environmental Health Officers, chartered safety advisers, insurers, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and Public Health England.
As part of the HSE's improvement to their communications strategy, guidance such as HS(G)95 have been evaluated to ascertain the relevance to the support that the HSE offer to industry and if that support is still valid. In the case of HS(G)95, HSE felt that the expert knowledge required to maintain guidance would be better served within the entertainment industry and that the industry should be custodians of the guide. PLASA was invited to manage that process and with the assistance and support from those participating in revising the guide, PLASA are able to offer the new guidance to the entertainment industry and it's free to download.
The Radiation safety of lasers used for display purposes HS(G)95 has now been withdrawn and the Safety of Display Lasers produced by PLASA will now be the guidance that replace that guide.
